I did a few years ago. Everyone starts at the same time but it takes a while for everyone to get going if you are towards the end of the group. When I did it, it was really cold and they delayed the start time multiple times. Still got done way before 12:30 though although it depends on how fast you can run a 5 mile too. I thought it was a 5k. Between the cold and the extra 3k I have the best time.
When I did it years ago, there weren’t waves. You just gathered by the start and everyone went together but like the person above said, it basically takes a bit for everyone to go across the start line. I too mistook/misremembered the race as a 5k rather than 5 miles LOL but depending on how fast/slow you are, you should be fine! Maybe try to get there a bit early so you can line up towards the front of the crowd too.

Usually slower runners hang back and let the serious ones go. Some people just walk.
I don't believe there are waves I think everyone starts at the same time and then like everyone said it kind of thins out based on how fast or how slow you are running.
