After living in this home for the past 9 months, I've come to understand the LL has done very little to keep up the house. The house was well lit so I didn't notice there were water stains on the ceilings in certain rooms and some of the lights in the home don't work at all, and just a few days ago all of the power outlets in the primary bathroom have stopped working. The LL is willing to let me out of the lease w/o penalty.
I applied for a rental and learned today I was declined bc I couldn't show two years good rental history. Before these two homes, I lived in an apt complex from February 2018 to May 2021, and prior to that I lived in an apt complex from 2010 to 2018 (same apt complex that I had the 2 month lease). I'm a solid renter who has had a shitty experience the last couple of years. It never would've occurred to me that I would get dinged for asking to be released from leases where the LL rented properties that were legitimate health and safety issues. I can't imagine continuing to be stuck here. We have roaches crawling across bedroom walls. I've been stung my a scorpion in my bed. My kid is sick every 4-6 weeks. I sent him to his grandparents this weekend bc he's been sneezing and coughing for weeks. Overnight his symptoms were gone. I just put him to bed and he sneezed half a dozen times in a row. This place is literally making him sick. What should I do?
Move back to an apartment.
I'm sorry to hear your situation, but if you moved into a 2nd place that also had a lot of issues without doing due diligence and asking the right questions, thats partially on you.
After you are in an apartment for a few years, hopefully renter history will not be an issue

Also EY1, I have over 20 years of positive rental history in Austin. The period of time from October 2021 to present has been the challenge and this is what seems to have gotten me declined. So, again, I'm just stunned that a lack of rental history was given as the reason when I've had a hard few years, but everything else in my past has been good, credit score at 780, and I male 4.5x the tenant rate, when the requirement asked for salary 3x the rent.

Ey1 I knew the second place was not new, but it seemed it was in decent condition. I did not expect there to be and crawling out of my shower wall or to find mold in kitchen cabinets or to have a LL who would tell me that he could and would enter the home at any time, whether or not there was a repair issue; he said this was his reason for denying my request for a keyless deadbolt, which is required under the TX Property Code. He, in fact, did enter the home entirely unannounced. Did not ring the bell. Not sure if he knocked bc I was in the shower. Imagine how you'd feel with a LL who entered your home with zero advance communication and found you naked. This was not an easy thing to endure, especially as someone who had been raped.
I know it's really easy to blame the victim, but they're are shitty people out there. I always tell me kid the vast majority people they will encounter are good, but I'm seriously starting to question that in light of my recent rental experiences.
If you have nothing helpful to add, EY1, please keep any further victim blaming to yourself. It's not helpful and it's certainly not what I've asked for in posting in this forum.
If anyone has advice for how to explain my rental history, or knows of a realtor that could be a strong advocate on my behalf, I would be most appreciative. Thank you
Sorry to hear this! Is there anything you can do legally to at least pay for the moving fees?

You know the crazy thing in all of this? The listing agent told me I was approved pending good rental history. They pulled my credit, criminal, and rental history check via transunion. It all came back clean. My realtor advised me to disclose the history with the short leases. Had I kept my mouth shut, I might very well have been approved.
