The fact that you were nervous and thoughtful about the conversation demonstrates your leadership ability as a manager. The dude probably knew he had run out of leash. Don’t give it too much thought.

I wouldn’t feel bad - sounds like it was fact based and objective feedback. Part of the territory of managing people unfortunately - sometimes you have to have difficult conversations because that is what is best for the team and for the individual in the long run.

Coincidentally, I had to have a similar conversation with one of my direct reports this week. Not a PIP, but a drop in performance rating needed to be explained. They previously displayed traits like what you were describing (argumentative, denial, excuse making etc) but this time just wrote down the feedback, claimed to not remember a lot of what I was describing and was relatively quiet otherwise. I suspect the tangible outcome of evaluating their performance (PIP in your case, drop in rating in mine) makes it more real and sometimes irrefutable. Just my two cents 🤷🏻♀️
