It happened to me once but it was worth leaving the money. I hate to say that, but there are some things that are worth more than money. My mental health was one of them.

Mental health should come first, but $10K is a heavy hit to just walk away from. It really shouldn’t feel like you’re stuck between your wellbeing and a financial penalty.
What?! That seems so wrong. Probably totally legal too since companies know every stupid loophole and how to exploit it.
Pro
Legal or not, it definitely doesn’t feel fair 😕

I've not met anyone that had to pay. Do they pro-rate it?
I worked for a company that SAID that I had to pay back relocation bonuses and expenses if I left the company within a year (my choice). It was pro-rated, but there was a time where I was on the line for three bonuses. (The oldest only had a couple of weeks left). I doubt it was enforcable (beyond keeping the last pay), but I still learned to count down.
Pro
Yeah, mine is prorated, but even then the number feels huge and makes leaving really scary. It definitely creates that ‘counting down the days’ feeling you mentioned. I get why companies do it, but it can still feel pretty trapping when the job isn’t a good fit

Oh wow… I never heard of that before and that sounds like a nightmare. But you are never stuck in a situation especially at a job. If your mental health is declining I would save enough money and pay it back and leave if you can.

I’m trying to weigh protecting my well-being with the financial reality and figure out the least damaging exit plan.
