A referral will help your chances significantly. Use your network or even find alumni at the company you’re applying to on LinkedIn (doesn’t have to be legal), grab a virtual coffee, and ask whether they’d be willing to refer you. If they say no, it’s a little awkward at worst. We get hundreds of applications per role and a referral gets you in front of a human.

You may need to rework your resume to standout. Do you have any friends or people in your network who are in-house and could review it for you? Do you have a specialty/niche? Have you tried the open to jobs feature on LinkedIn so recruiters can reach out?

Make yourself stand out. I got my in house role at a SaaS company because I was a software engineer before law school. Find something that makes you different from other applicants and go with it. Also network like crazy, always helps to know someone.

Apply cold but make sure to tweak your resume based on each job posting. To the extent you can match words to get through an algo the better (obviously don’t lie or mislead on your experience).

Go to the company’s page on LinkedIn and look up the counsel who work at the company (should be able to search all employees who work for the company on the Company’s LinkedIn page). See how they describe their jobs and their path. Should also give you an idea of things.

I’m currently searching and I’ve decided I wanna be in my city for a while longer so I’m prioritizing all jobs in my city in my speciality, even if a bit more junior than I would take. If the job meets my requirements, it’s auto-apply! Can decide if I ultimately want it if I get an offer. That’s how I’ve been thinking about it at least

What’s your background? Litigation/transactional/regulatory? What industry? Any particular niche? Not all types of law and industries have the same marketability in terms of going in house so that could be a threshold issue to try to figure out.

OP- I found an in-house gig with finance background very recently. I tried through recruiters but ended up getting an offer through my own professional acquaintances. What year are you and what kind of positions are you looking at? Happy to give more insight into what I went through.

Hello Fishes,
My brother is a b.com graduate(2020 passed out) and looking for a job.
The problem here is because Finance jobs requires exceptional skills and academics due to which he is not able to get shortlisted for most job interview screening, he is receiving interview calls from great companies but not able to convert them.
If anybody can help even with an Internship position at their firm that would be a great starter to his career.

Why do recruiters never tell you which agency they want to talk to you about until they get you on the phone? I don’t want to waste anyone’s time and it would be helpful to know this info from the initial outreach. My experience with this only applies to healthcare, but would imagine it’s the same in consumer as well. Anyone?

There’s no reason you have to put up with a job you hate. I spent many years working in a toxic environment with a boss who gossiped and lead through fear. He wasn’t really much of a leader but basically a foreman. And he could make my existence miserable. I admit that it wasn’t easy to find another job but the bottom line is: trust your guts. If you feel something is wrong it’s because it probably is. Don’t second guess yourself. Look for options and and fight for your mental health.
