"Is it realistic to expect consistency in this field?" Not really. You might be able to get a consistent schedule, but I wouldn't say it's the norm. That's the nature of working in an industry that's open 7 days a week.
Never seen a consistent schedule in all the retail I’ve worked in, but it’s hard to get anything else without experience!

Not unreasonable, but also not realistic. A business schedules based on business needs, and that means you don’t get a consistent schedule….
Yeah it always just depends on business needs!
Needing to be flexible is almost always the case. But there are issues in that where it’s a flip-flop shifts every week, that’s too much. Opening one day and closing the next is too much for me. Consistency, within reason, is something to find. Usually, a bad sign if they don’t have semi-regular people in for shifts.
Yeah I guess!

A lot of people run into that exact problem. Retail scheduling often prioritizes coverage over consistency, so flexibility becomes the expectation. Some stores are better than others though. If stable hours matter, it is worth asking directly how far in advance schedules are posted and how often they change.
That’s very true!
There’s no consistency in retail…there never has been. That’s why it works for some people and for others it doesn’t.
That’s so true, so unfortunate!

I’ve run into that too. In retail, “flexible schedule” usually means unpredictable hours, so wanting consistency isn’t unreasonable. Sometimes it just comes down to finding a store or role that values stability enough to offer it.
Yeah it definitely is!
It is not realistic, simple as that. There are certain times higher managers need to be in the building, you have to accommodate requests off, and the needs of the business changes. Unless you become your own boss in a tourist town where your store only runs 11-5, you’re SOL on a consistent schedule in retail.
Yeah I guess so!

Things like these shops and restaurants with long hours opening you'd be expected to work a variety although you can land the job and try set up a flexible contract if you're UK based.
When I worked at a retail store my hours was constant 7:30-2 Tuesday-Saturday off Sundays and every other Monday the weeks I worked Mondays they give me a random day during the week but now I work a job that is all over the place with scheduling and I told them I couldn’t do that now they have changed the rules to everyone has the be flexible if I would have known this before getting hired I would not of got the job I’m a VERY consistent person that has a schedule for every day life
The higher in retail ive gotten , the crazier the expections of my flexiblity became. I had to decide to put family first and step down to get a schedule that matches my needs
