Hopped from my current firm a few years ago after I got an internal promotion. Helped secure a higher pay job. After 3 years came back to the first firm in a promoted role with a higher pay bracket. Would have ended up at least 20k lower in base pay if I had stayed and grovelled. Cheers!
That’s a lovely little deal there! Annoying they couldn’t offer you that when you were already there.
That depends on what you consider success. If you're talking about climbing up the ladder and you care about the company, you may prefer an internal promotion. If you're looking for a higher salary, there's usually a better chance of getting that if you go to another organization. New arrivals often make more, it's how companies attract new people.
Yeah I’ve heard external hires are better treated, I think it’s just the faff of having to apply for a new place.
I always have better luck hopping from company to company to be honest. I have never gotten an internal promotion that exceeded what I was able to get from another company offer.
Yeah this seems like the general consensus I think.
Hop
I will!
For me switching companies has brought more of what I cared about - flexibility, work life balance and less stress
Yeah ultimately I think you have to break out if you want to get what you’re after.
Hopping around. I stayed at a company for 18 years hoping they would recognize my skills and abilities and would promote me. But no, why pay you more when you are already doing more. I left the company and got 20k more and half the workload at a new company.
Yeah there’s incentive too, and at the end of the day they might lay you off anyway for all that loyalty.
