Honestly, I have passed on super-qualified candidates because personality and team fit matter a lot. If nobody else measures up on skills, I’d consider reaching back out, maybe have a candid talk about communication style and expectations. Sometimes, a direct conversation can clear things up and lead to a great hire, if you set boundaries up front.

it sounds a little subjective ( the sense of entitlement). Could it be nerves perhaps?
I think you did the right thing. If they communicated a sense of entitlement during an interview, it will even be worse once they are working and part of a team. They will make the team dysfunctional, and then you will have to rehire all over again.
You have to consider the team as a whole. Even if you bring in an accomplished and skilled individual, if it negatively impacts everyone else on the team, kind of a loss.
You were right to trust your gut with that one. It's not just what the candidate will contribute, but how they will fit in with the team. If they damage morale with their entitlement, the overall productivity of the team will decrease significantly.
