Have you ever had a boss who changes expectations after the fact? I’ll follow the instructions to the letter and still get hit with “Actually, I meant something else” or “You should’ve read between the lines.” It’s like the goalposts are constantly moving, and no matter how well I perform, it’s not what they really wanted. It’s frustrating and demoralizing to feel like you’re set up to fail from the start. How do you deal with someone who’s never satisfied?

If it’s habitual and not a 1-off then the person will never change. Once I realized that I left because I felt like I was going crazy despite having written notes of what they had perviously said, etc. One day I even said “that’s not what I have in my notes from yesterday” and was told “YOUR NOTES ARE WRONG.”

The other thing you can do is after every verbal interaction you follow up with a written recap email: “As we discussed, the team will deprioritize X to execute Y.” But that’s more a CYA tactic, doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll stick to what they said. Good luck & stay sane!

Sadly, this is a common occurrence in many workplaces. I've seen promotions and people hired back because of who you know. When it comes to Manager material, they don't have a clue. Since no one in the past has complained about the disrespect and bullying, when you speak up, you're the bad guy, eventually receiving repercussions and retaliation, making it worse. These managers NEED training first to know how to treat people and to know how to respect their coworkers! LACK OF Ethics, manners, and respect from higher-ups are making workplaces toxic, because money is always the bottom line!!!

Yes! I stayed as long as I could, and then finally quit without having another job along with two other of my coworkers within two weeks of each other.

I did the same!!! It was the best decision I ever made and haven’t looked back once. Even in this economy- my worth in myself and work ethic(and mental health/peace) is far more valuable than a paycheck from that place. I’ve been working for almost 30 years and never had been treated like that before. Micromanagement on steroids.
I’ll pass.

Sounds like a boss that can’t clearly communicate and expects you to read their mind.

Yes. I had one that would change things based on the last person they spoke with.
Real scenario
Them : Let’s go do X.
Me : I tell the team we are going to do X.

Next day.
Them: We are doing Y.
Me : But you said X yesterday.

Them : who said that?
Me : shakes head. Defeated. Have to go tell team different direction. Sorry.

I look like an idiot and cannot blame them to the team so I suffer

Found other job in 4 months in different group.

I used to have this all the time- I would do exactly as they ask and something would still be wrong… got to a point where I knew they would never be happy so I just did things my way but prepared myself for the feedback in advance

it's the exact same thing at my work place. I've been looking for a new job for over a year now. In the past 3 years we've had NUMEROUS people quit - some of them have moved away for college, 2 of them got "real jobs" when they completed their college program, and all the rest because they just could not deal with the toxicity of that place. Almost nobody gives notice of any sorts - not even a "by the way, I quit". LOL They just walk out one day and never return. Best part is when my boss acts like they were the problem and not her. I'd say most of the people that work there are on the verge of walking out at any given moment.

Happens daily in my world! Goal posts are on wheels and all management does is keep them well-oiled. Constantly changing personnel and priorities make it difficult to actually get anything done, no less having to go back and correct things due to management misdirection.

It was kind of embarrassing. Guys (and in some cases girls too) please buy a deo stick/perfume. It’s CHEAP - You will still be able to send money back home! 😂
