lol 40 isn’t even that old! Damn our industry sucks.
It’s not really about age. It’s about money. When you reach a certain level they know you’re worth more. They’ll hire a bunch of edgy kids to do the work for half the price.
VCs are dictating everything these days. Airlines are suffering at the hands of pressure from Wall Street types…who are largely kids from B schools.
We live in a disgusting, vapid time.
Well, I do have a story to share. I interviewed for a job at 40. We were discussing salary and I asked what they were thinking? You know, like a range. The response I got back was “Well, we were actually looking for someone younger for this role.” I kid you not! My mouth dropped. I ended up getting offered the job with the salary that I wanted. I guess they didn’t want a lawsuit.
100 slide strategy deck for anything is a red flag 🤣
I freelanced at a Brooklyn social/digital agency. The briefing was a 100 page strategy deck. By the end of the 45 minute meeting, I still did not know what the strategy was, or the exact deliverables of the social banners. "I'm lost." I said. They interpreted that as, "You old and slow, bitch." But I didn't care, bc I wanted to do a nice job on the project. So I continued to Slack the account manager and strategist and CD ...to clarify the strategy and exact messaging hierarchy. More decks arrived. And not even the CD could articulate the strategy in a single sentence. Two days later I was let go bc "we neeed someone who can work fast." Coming from a 30 year old to a 52 year old, I know what that means.
100 slide strategy deck for banners is a red flag…
I’m 44 and have no plans to go into management. I’m a well-paid sr copywriter and hope to stay that way. That said, I do have a side hustle that I also hope becomes more than a side gig before too long. My advice is, choose your own path and what works for you and your values.
Thankfully I have never experienced this but I feel like being in my early 50's is still really young. I do have some older friends that have experienced this and it very much does happen. I hope it doesn't happen to me when I get older.
“Age and guile beat youth, innocence, and a bad haircut.”
Come on. 40? You have at least 12 years (if you take care of yourself ) to worry about ageism.
Depends on the agency I think. I actually love working for people over 40. They are my favorite. In a weird way, I feel safe with them. Like, oh good. There is an adult here. I wish there was a map showing how to find ECDs over 40. Like a map of the stars.
