I haven’t worked at a 24 hour news network, but I have worked in Local News and I know the anchors would talk about how hard it was to stay neutral at times. Showing a real attempt at neutrality, at least on a local news level.
It’s nearly impossible for zero bias to exist, especially because sometimes attempts to be unbiased create a moral equivalence where there isn’t one which in its own way is a bias. True journalist need to be careful and worry about every word to avoid using loaded words and it can be incredibly difficult to avoid confirmation bias. Unbiased networks exist but they are usually much smaller and deal in more local news and even then it’s tough. I have worked mainly overseas as a war correspondent and as for news networks if it’s a large corporation then often times the news is mixed with commentators, not journalists and we end up with 24 hour news. I have seen networks attempt to be unbiased, I would say the closest I have had contact with to an unbiased news source with high traffic that covers international stories as well is Agence France-Presse. The Australian Associated Press is pretty unbiased now even though it was founded by the Murdoch Family as now it’s a non-profit owned by Acta Diurna AAP, in the U.S. I have only seen it in local news and still there is some bias. Usually when money is involved expect bias, mostly because unfortunately most people prefer news that fits in with their own biases. That said even if there’s a bit of a left-center bias with story selection and loaded words you can still find highly factual reporting at the New York Times, obviously Op-Eds shouldn’t be considered as it’s meant to be an opinion piece.
