I am sorry to hear that. There are really 3 things to consider:
1. Monthly expenses vs monthly income/allowance: how much do you spend a month and how much would you need to be paid going forward to be comfortable.
2. How close to retirement are you in terms of wealth? Age doesn't guarantee retirement. Money does.
3. Do you want to continue doing accounting or can you work doing something else that you enjoy and have enough to satisfy 1 above.
The market sucks. I am looking for a job myself after getting laid off a week ago. Not a lot of options out there and it's very competitive from what I have seen. I would say make sure to have good references and try to decide how you want the rest of your time to go depending on the answers to the question.
Age is just a number. I am sure you are still capable of doing the work. Don't let it get you down.
I am of similar age and looking for a different job. I have removed my dates for my undergraduate and graduate degrees from my CV as well as most of my early jobs so it doesn't sway negatively against my age before people even give me a chance. It is more difficult but not impossible. Good luck!
I am sorry you have to go through this. The big question is if you want to continue doing what you were doing. If you do, what was your previous level? Are you looking for something of the same level or will you be ok with something of lower level? If you are ok with lower level, re-write your resume to have less experience and apply for as many as possible. A the same time, apply for same levels or even higher levels at other companies. With your years of experience, there will be other companies that appreciate your expertise.
What do you want to do? Live your life with purpose, if that job was your purpose find another similar role or start your own consultancy hustle.
Go on YouTube, Coursera and etc to offer courses on your subject matter expertise. I say all these because that’s what I planned to do at your age. Take it easy and just live moderately. This way you can survive and probably even live decently without having to struggle
Reach out to all your contacts who have worked with you in the past and who know your work qualities and see if they have any connections they can help you with. Most people want to help. Dont be shy. Good luck. Age discrimination is definitely real, and it sucks!
Find an old man who has money & then marry him. That is the quickest thing I know to better finances quickly 😂
