Hey all! I’m a copywriter in Chicago and considering relocating to Minneapolis. Any creatives who have done the same? What do you like/dislike about both cities? Looking for any advice and perspective

I’m from Chicago & now live in Minneapolis. I like it a lot here. There are a lot of independent agencies that do a lot of great work. And there are bigger agencies if that’s your thing that do great work as well. I will say as a transplant it is hard to get into the circle here. People in Minneapolis know each other since preschool so it’s hard in that way. The cost of living is great. There’s public transportation. The bike system is amazing

There’s a division of Ogilvy in Mpls called The Lacek Group - great shop. Currently hiring! You should check them out.

There are a ton of agencies here in Minneapolis. I would agree that many agencies are in a hiring freeze until after the first of the year. I’m born and raised in MN and never had an issue finding work. It can be rather competitive though for the creative roles.

I just moved here for wife’s job. I’ve done some online research, but won’t be actually seeking work until after we get settled, find a place to live (just got here four days ago) and find a school for our kid. Even then, I’m thinking nobody will be hiring until next January. Seems like there’s a ton of agencies. I found (so far) about 17 larger agencies with over 80ish people. Some of them with great work. There’s gotta be someone who’s hiring .

These are super helpful, thanks all! Would any of you say the social circle barriers apply to the advertising community as well? And was there a transition to the pace of life from Chicago?

@C1, I’m originally from the twin cities, have lived in Chicago for decades. I’ve decided to move back as soon as my place sells. The trick to breaking into the natives is to be persistent. Because everybody has known everyone forever, their schedule can get full. Once you establish yourself as a person who would be a great addition, you’ll find yourself in

Has the blush come off the rose for this shining city on a hill? Have any other foreign fish in the US been asking yourself why we made the conscious decision to seek out a life in this country? The racial tensions and frequent shootings (including a much covered grocery store that I used to frequent) are outweighing the benefits of staying here. Never have I had to worry this much about going to the grocery store. The reaction of society here towards these issues is also dismal. Is it worth it?
