Don’t come here ‘cause you and I will be competing for the same jobs. Just kidding (we’ll, kidding about the “don’t come here” part. Not so much about the second part).
In all seriousness... I came here about a year ago ‘cause of my wife’s job. I was freelancing before we came and I’m still doing that, except I’m not freelancing with anyone in town (yet) ‘cause all my connections are in the other cities I’ve lived. I’ve made some efforts and applied to some openings here without much success. I’ve been learning about this whole “Minnesota nice” thing and let me tell you, it takes some getting used to. It’s a tough town if you don’t know anyone. Everyone seems to know each other here because people grew up together but if you’re an outsider, people don’t tend to trust you or really even give much of a shit. Perhaps it’s tougher for me because I’m not super gregarious and I’m not so great at networking. Also, it’s cold AF, but I’m sure you’ve already heard that. I personally still think it’s a good city and a pretty well kept secret in terms of ad towns. Larger traditional ad agencies are struggling here but there’s a ton of small to medium size shops doing really well and thriving. Also a lot of in-house opportunities at many Fortune 500 places. You can PM me if you want to ask something more specific cause the Minneapolis bowl is pretty dead and you probably won’t get a ton of replies.
Thank you so much!!! I'm looking about a year out -- any advice on what I could do in the meantime? I've been obsessed with Fallon but I feel like it's a moonshot idea?
ACD jobs don’t open very frequently and when they do, they’re usually filled with people who are known to the ECD/GCDs or have been in the pipeline. That said, freelancing has been a good doorway in for people I’ve known that have come in from other markets. Look for creative resource managers on LinkedIn and ask them to coffee so you can get on their radar.
Also, make sure you buy a ticket for The Show, our local creative awards show. It’s at the end of Feb. and it’s the best opportunity you’ll have to meet creatives around town.
These are good tips. Thanks!
Good friggin luck. If you’re not from there, they don’t want you. Inbreds
I’m from here and they still don’t want me Lmao
