I've been in healthcare consulting 20+ years and have seen a lot of nurses come and go. You have to ask yourself what do you really enjoy about work, because of its helping patients directly, then dont come here. Everything we do may in impact lives at scale, but you list the human side.
Also, you work in an ED, with is fast paced and you're always thinking on your feet. In consulting, it's a different type of thinking with research, interviews, partner convos to get perspective....overall decisions are slower than what you're probably used to.
The skill set isn't exactly the same, more telling a story over 2-3 months rather than diagnose and move on. Typically I see RNs struggle to keep up with the minor things at the lower levels (Manager and below) because their younger counterparts have been doing it longer and "just get it".
The expectation is that you're open to travel in most cases, so with a new family, it's going to be tough if you don't have a support system in place.
I'm not saying don't make the leap, just things to consider.
Good thoughtful answer, rare to see here
Honestly I would love something slower pace away from the bedside, I do think I would bring a different perspective to the table but I typically pick up on things pretty quickly. How often do you travel? My current schedule is every other weekend. 8-5, 4-1am, 10-10 and every week is inconsistent. I feel like some travel would be doable but not constant. A work life balance but also contributing some way to healthcare is what I think I need. I’m do for a change so hoping to find something that fits. If you have any advice on how to look for job roles or what consultants are looking for when hiring with my skill set I would love your insight.
Oh I don’t doubt that there is stress involved but I’m a pro at handling stressful situations at this point in my life with working in the ED for so long. My documenting skills could use some work but willing to learn and improve as I go.
