I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

What I normally do when I start a project is list out what we need to find out and prioritize what needs research and what doesn’t. Then once I complete the work I would gather my findings then show them. I would also make sure that I conduct stakeholder interviews so that it helps alleviate time. All this said if it’s at the MVP stage then you need to gather as much data now so that you can also continue to use it for other features and in the shortest amount of time possible.
You don’t have to go into too much detail but if you explain why you did what you did in your discovery phase on here then you should be okay. However, when you move on to other projects, include stakeholders in the discovery phase or share your findings with the team early-on. I found that what I’m telling you has helped me especially when I took a product from 0-1.
