Unless you are seeking a specialized LLM, this is largely irrelevant. You will learn the same law at all T14s (and all T50s to be frank). The opportunities are largely equivalent, unless you want to extern during a school semester while still taking some in-person classes, in which case geography matters. Just go to the highest-ranked school or the one that gives you the best scholarship.
^ this is the way. I’d add that if you’re particularly interested in a certain area you could apply to some schools that offer a clinic or other experiential courses in that area. Some schools have more robust offerings in, for example, health law than others. It won’t necessarily open up job opportunities in that area or anything but you could get more exposure to see whether you actually like it or not. Most law students have no idea what practice area they’re interested in and if they do often end up changing their mind a handful of times anyway.
Another way to look at it is who the professors are in a given law school. If you’re interested in copyright law, for example, you might prefer Harvard because Rebecca Tushnet is a prominent scholar in that area. If you like antitrust law, you might choose Penn for Herbert Hovenkamp. While all law schools teach these subjects there’s something special about taking a class from a true giant in the field.
Rising Star
Region is also important. With respect to health law in particular, I found that my school being a top 10 program made a huge difference and I became a healthcare attorney and am now in pharma.
Top 14 is not the place for that. From there, you just get a job at a big law firm. Then that firm tells you your practice area based on what they’re short of at the time.
