Hi! CPA in tax, 3 years experience. I've hopped around a bit. 3 different public accounting firms in 3 years. Should I be honest on my resume, or consolidate to the one that's least likely to answer a reference call? Thanks.

Show all, it will show up on background check anyway, you don’t want to be seen as lie

Three different firms in your first three years? Yikes

Good reasons for leaving the first two, still at the 3rd. Applicants aren't the only ones who lie at the interview.

So you want to lie on your resume? 👍🏻

Trying being confident and transparent in your work history and in general. It truly leads to much better opportunities to be authentic in yourself.

Be honest. I hire accountants, and I don’t hold it against candidates if they have had multiple employers. Sure, I’ll ask why, but more to understand their reasoning. Some of the most principled people have change jobs.

Changing jobs is not a sin. There are many jerks who lack leadership skills and will run off good talent.

Just a personal story so take it with a grain of salt. I had an interview with a top 200 firm just a few weeks ago. I’ve also bounced around with 2 firms in my first two years. They liked me and said to reapply after next busy season (I was applying to a senior role and they wanted 3 busy seasons). The conversation that I had with the HR department was to keep interviewing and take any good opportunities that may come during this summer. They basically told me bouncing around isn’t as much of a turn off as it was many moons ago. Especially if there’s a reason for each move.

Don’t lie on your resume. All they can do is confirm employment they cant bad mouth you to prospective employers. But just some advice hopping around does give a negative impression when it seems like a recurring theme. It can lead to the impression that you may not be worth the investment or you are a challenging person to work with / please. If you get the interview just explain why you had a good reason for leaving and if it it’s truly a good reason they’ll understand. If not, may be worth reflecting on what you’re looking for and if that actually aligns with the jobs you’re taking.
