Hi! My company is trying to diversify our legal vendor pool by using more small firms owned by people of color and women. Could you please share best practices for recruiting, selecting, working with, and evaluating small firms owned by people of color? (Some best practices might apply to working with small firms regardless of whether they are minority or majority owned). Thank you!

Maybe y'all are already doing this, but making sure the large firms you use have women and attorneys of color on the legal team and doing meaningful work. Some of those folks may go out on their own late. They may also be promoted to managing partner in a way that allows them to ensure the firm is serious about diversity as well. I have a female friend who was at a big firm and ultimately left to start her own firm. Several clients followed her she has grown quickly hired her husband (a racial minority) and another female attorney.

Trust a try. Ask them if they need resources to complete a task (west law and lexis are super expensive). Be patient and try to pay them what you would pay anyone else.

Thanks so much. Great tip.

Hi! Stanek Lemon a majority-woman owned IP law firm. The two co-managing shareholders (Liz and Shawna) are women and Shawna is a PoC. They would be a great firm to reach out to. Their firm is growing and can handle most technologies. Sorry if this sounds like a rave review, but we've had really good experiences with them and it's great to support their cause and continue to build businesses owned by women and PoC. Note that their website is a bit dated but I hear it's getting updated (not that it matters much). Hope this helps. I'd be happy to provide a contact if interested!

Art Directors. How protective are you of your references and resources? I have a folder with lot’s of textures, mockups that I’ve spent time building. I even paid for some of those assets. So I always get a lot of compliments on my comps and decks. Sometimes someone ask for my files and I really don’t want to since I put so much effort on that. But I also feel bad being gatekeeper of things.

I’m having trouble working in Tax. I’m overwhelmed and am feeling like I’m not producing my best work. I want to talk to someone at work about it but a) I don’t know who to go to and b) feel like it’s not worth it because there’s nothing that anyone can do but tell me to get a different job. I feel like I SHOULD say something to someone though, right? Idk. I’ve been on the job hunt for a while now and am not really having any luck, which is just adding to my despair. What should I do?

Not legal-related but: thoughts on A Jazzman’s Blues? I loved it. Been a while since a movie has stayed on my mind long after it ended, like this one has. Shocking Tyler Perry wrote it. “Paper Airplanes” is a hauntingly beautiful song.

I'm a younger plaintiff's side attorney (31). Does anyone else feel like white attorneys give you a particularly harder time? Like unreasonably denying clear facts, or trying to fish for a way to sanction you? Usually it's solo defense attorneys that get extreme with it, but I've seen some questionable stuff from BigLaw too. Hopefully I'm not the only one.

LA fish: Any ideas for Pro Bono assistance for nonprofit community/cultural orgs? A family member recently joined the board of a nonprofit community/cultural org and is looking for counsel. I’m unable to represent them myself due to my work and lack of experience, and I’m unfamiliar with potential resources. Thank you!

Have you ever been told off by an older attorney of color? We have one Black partner at our firm and in conversation with him this morning he told me I should work on sounding and looking "more professional" and not let my "tone" or "bad attitude" get in the way. I don't think I've ever had a bad attitude at work, and whatever "tone" I'm speaking in it's my normal one. As a Black woman I just feel super weird about it and kind of sad.
