I’m having trouble working in Tax. I’m overwhelmed and am feeling like I’m not producing my best work. I want to talk to someone at work about it but a) I don’t know who to go to and b) feel like it’s not worth it because there’s nothing that anyone can do but tell me to get a different job. I feel like I SHOULD say something to someone though, right? Idk. I’ve been on the job hunt for a while now and am not really having any luck, which is just adding to my despair. What should I do?

Here is how you do it.

Look at your coach or whoever you want to reach out to's schedule. Stick some time on there with a message:

Hey Xxxxx

Wanted to throw some time to discuss my performance and discuss how I can continue to progress and help my engagements. Feel free to move to a time more convenient. Thank you for your time.

Best,
Tax Associate

I wish my brain dead associates did this more often then just waiting around for me to figure it out. I WANT to help. But I'm a god damn busy person. Meet me half way and I'll do my best to get you on the right track.

This is a great response. I might not know you are floundering because you 1) are overwhelmed 2) not on a good team or working with the best folks/having good seniors above you or 3) just plain incompetent.

I can generally work with at least 2.5 of these 3 and make something positive of the situation. Or if the exit is what you are really needing I can have that discussion with you as well if we both think that may be in your best interest.

Remember too you are still learning this role and also probably learning underneath seniors and managers who might be new and inexperienced in their roles as well.

Not sure if you are at kpmg, but if not, I can refer you to KPMG. I’m in audit and it can definitely lead to more opportunities than tax. Many people I know have ended up staying in audit long term (external or internal) or used the experience gained to pivot into a finance/operational role. I also have colleagues working on blockchain, ESG, or even more technical aspects. Dm me if interested.

Ask yourself what you gain from saying something to someone. Idk what your situation is, but from my perspective I would not tell anyone this. It simply doesn’t accomplish anything, other than negatively impacting your future network/comp/opportunities. Just my two cents.

Keep looking for a new job. But don’t tell your current employer that youre bad at your job and are looking for something else, but haven’t found anything yet.

Totally understandable, thank you for this.

Do you all see a compelling future in your tax career? I’ll go first, I don’t see a compelling future working for a large PA firm in the long run because you have to work more as you move up. However, I do see a compelling future by using my knowledge and skills to open my own firm/business and work less hours as long as I make enough money which is $75k, or if I do work long hours, it’s because I want to.
