High school teachers, to get to know your students and get them to open up, do you have any specific activities?

I always have students make storage folders at the beginning of the year. I give them specific requirements such as a self-portrait, interests, etc. I feel that it is a good way to get to know kids that do not like to express themselves verbally. We learn that art is a language to communicate and at times utilitarian. I see natural conversations grow from these folders between students and between myself and students.

It is also a good way to see their art ability and drawing experience. I often promote a few students to higher levels of art as a result of this lesson.

Such a good idea! I especially like that you can see their Art ability. How long does this activity take?

With establishing the rules expectations and routines and all of the other beginning school stuff it usually takes the week to do.

Anonymously written notes put in a box. Notes of what bothers them or excite them…?

Additional Posts in Art Teachers

We talk about keeping rigor in our classes, however I’m finding my HS students need straight forward instructions. Most students are struggling to meet their Maslow’s needs that to use higher Blooms seems like a stretch. How are you all supporting creativity and originality in artwork when kids are struggling to keep afloat?

Anyone else being used as a building sub? My school cut my classes in half and are making me cover classes on my free periods. Academic teachers don't have to cover classes.

My school deliberately cut the number of classes that the specials teachers teach so that we could be building subs for quarantined and sick teachers (we are hybrid). So... I teach fewer classes (which is a relief because specials teachers teach way more classes than core teachers normally) but I'm pulled for most of my planning periods to babysit classes. I need my planning periods so I can redo my ENTIRE curriculum... and I just feel unappreciated, used, and nothing more than a babysitter.

It only took me 7 years to figure this system out.... posting in case it helps anyone else! I color coded my classes and printed off numbers according to the number of kids in my classes. I then assign each kid a number that corresponds with my gradebook. When they turn in their projects, they put their number with it. This way, no contact and I can easily see who has and hasn't turned in their projects yet. I take the list down once they remember their number.
