Art Teachers

Advice request: Any suggestions for meaningful/engaging early finisher art activities or routines? I teach Pre-K - 8th. Sketchbook time just does not engage them as I had hoped (especially 5-8).

My students LOVE to do ‘mini masterpieces for mice’. I stumbled across this by accident this past year after trying to get rid of small sizes of paper cuttings. Now I actually have a pile of tiny papers pre-cut. I give them a ‘theme’ for the gallery exhibit. I have found it amazing that students will become so engaged in drawing tiny and adding a lot of tiny detail, there is no intimidation of a big blank sheet of white, clean paper. This year I found some mini clothes pins so I’m going to hang a string close to the floor so students will be able to hang up a exhibit for the mice.

The younger students (K-1) love choosing books to read. I give students suggested creative ideas for free drawing. Some older students love coloring sheets using colored pencils. I copy the best from books I own. Finally, the interactive art website called NGAkids Art Zone is wonderful (students have to take turns with the 2 computers I have).

It’s clear we can’t test everyone that has COVID and I’ve seen posts that for every person tested, theres 5-10 that aren’t tested. Doesn’t that mean that 1/3 of the country has been infected at this point? What am I missing? Wouldn’t we reach herd immunity faster as things open up and testing ramps up? Just curious, not trying to start anything political.
