My students LOVE to do ‘mini masterpieces for mice’. I stumbled across this by accident this past year after trying to get rid of small sizes of paper cuttings. Now I actually have a pile of tiny papers pre-cut. I give them a ‘theme’ for the gallery exhibit. I have found it amazing that students will become so engaged in drawing tiny and adding a lot of tiny detail, there is no intimidation of a big blank sheet of white, clean paper.
This year I found some mini clothes pins so I’m going to hang a string close to the floor so students will be able to hang up a exhibit for the mice.
That sounds awesome, thanks for the tip!
The younger students (K-1) love choosing books to read. I give students suggested creative ideas for free drawing. Some older students love coloring sheets using colored pencils. I copy the best from books I own. Finally, the interactive art website called NGAkids Art Zone is wonderful (students have to take turns with the 2 computers I have).
Nice ideas, thanks!
My students love having an art Gallery Theme competition! Once a month I choose a theme like "turkeys on vacation" and students draw what they think that looks like. I have an extra bulletin board and hang them up. I choose winners from each grade level and we celebrate them in class by clapping, and they get to sit on my chair for the day with a prize out of the prize box (doller store finds, like beaded necklaces)
