Anyone else being used as a building sub? My school cut my classes in half and are making me cover classes on my free periods. Academic teachers don't have to cover classes.

I would be more than a little upset. We use other teachers when possible, voluntarily during free period to cover. Our school also decided to hire full time and long term subs, they report everyday.

like

If we run out of subs the specialists and interventionists cover it. I’m sorry, it just doesn’t feel fair. Helping out is one thing but hey, can you teach some art while you’re subbing?

like

Right?! It's to the point where the 7th graders (i only teach 8th grade this year) think I'm a building sub.

Old thread but school starts in a month and sincerely hoping this situation has changed.

Visual art as a subject tends to be less understood and has lower "value" than music or P.E. in administrators' and parents' minds. It's the first to be cut. I refused to get a Masters in another area because I know I would have been pulled half time from art. The students lose out!

My only suggestion is to take what you can from it. You can pick up some strategies, maybe some discipline ideas from being in other classrooms. Make curriculum connections. Hope for a better next year.

Yep, happens about once or twice a week to me.

Well good news, not sure how many subs our on our list yet but they upped the pay big time! Hopefully no subbing for me this year!

We have a contract that will now allow that to happen.

It’s my gf’s bday next week. She is starting grad school soon and needs a new laptop (she has an old PC). I wanted to give her ~$300 towards a new MacBook, but felt that was a bit impersonal. So, I went to a nearby stationary store to get a card and maybe a few other small things. Picked up a card, gift bag, tissue paper, moleskin planner and leather document holder…next thing you know I’m checking out and it’s like $115!! Now I’m thinking I’ll just give her $200 towards a laptop 😅 😅

Additional Posts in Art Teachers

We talk about keeping rigor in our classes, however I’m finding my HS students need straight forward instructions. Most students are struggling to meet their Maslow’s needs that to use higher Blooms seems like a stretch. How are you all supporting creativity and originality in artwork when kids are struggling to keep afloat?

It only took me 7 years to figure this system out.... posting in case it helps anyone else! I color coded my classes and printed off numbers according to the number of kids in my classes. I then assign each kid a number that corresponds with my gradebook. When they turn in their projects, they put their number with it. This way, no contact and I can easily see who has and hasn't turned in their projects yet. I take the list down once they remember their number.

My school deliberately cut the number of classes that the specials teachers teach so that we could be building subs for quarantined and sick teachers (we are hybrid). So... I teach fewer classes (which is a relief because specials teachers teach way more classes than core teachers normally) but I'm pulled for most of my planning periods to babysit classes. I need my planning periods so I can redo my ENTIRE curriculum... and I just feel unappreciated, used, and nothing more than a babysitter.
