I used a scaled grading system to help students who are falling behind (where an F is from 0%-24% as opposed to 50%)
This is a more encouraging way to get them to turn in work for them so far. I'm at a title 1 school with a lot of kids in foster care, a million IEPs, kids without reliable internet, etc. So giving them some slack on grades so they can dig themselves out of a 0% in my class is worth it.
Honestly don't care if people think I'm "giving the kid an easy A", I'm trying to emotionally support them. 🤷♀️
I state what needs to be shown, demonstrated etc.. Leaving it up to them to determine how they want to approach it. Not lowering the bar, just making the bar more clearly defined.
Art is an elective and one of my goals is to have students leaving the year with a positive memory of my class. If they are struggling to get their basic needs met, I encourage them to take care of themselves first and foremost- art assignments can be put on hold given the circumstances of this year.
This is a great post. I don’t like cookie cutter assignments, like those sip & paint events. Even in F2F instruction, I had to limit my examples, lest I see student interpretations of it. For next semester, I will set up Google site to post better examples—so they can see their peers did it, and they can, too. It did help when I was able to talk to students individually and give them feedback. Our district took the position that we teachers cannot compel students to turn on cameras.
Within the project planning, I assign that students get feedback from their family or classmates in breakout rooms. That is posted in the process portfolio slide deck.
This has been a challenging year.
