High School Independent study student: Do you give them a curriculum, due dates, completed project number, projects/processes to choose from, a final show? What does an ideal student look like to you?

I have only had independent study students one at a time, so I kept things very flexible. I required a meeting in person about once a week, with a weekly sketchbook assignment ( so there is a consistent grade) and I discuss ideas about what projects they want to do. -> some projects will just take more time. I believe that sometimes the process can be more valuable than the out come. I try to address potential problems they may encounter, and basically mentor. I also offer a way that they can send progress photos if necessary and advise if needed.

...and often their sketchbook and studies are worth showing with the finished projects. People often underestimate the pre-work, and brain storming.

. I teach photography so each day I.S students have to take their own photos and write about them academically and using class vocabulary. They also have to find 3 pieces of art. one in the morning, one at lunch time, and one in the afternoon. They then also write about that. Kinda like a photo journal of their trip.

I had advanced students the same period that I taught 9th graders so they were essentially independent study. I kept things pretty flexible as far as what projects we were doing but gave them due dates for projects. Sometimes the due dates became ‘check-in’ dates due to some students schedule conflicts causing a big disparity in completion.

I made the switch from public accounting to industry last year. I took an offer for a slightly higher salary ($3K). I did not receive a raise or bonus as of 12/31/19 as I was not there the entire year. My concern now is that due to the covid19 situation, I will not get a raise and/or bonus. Essentially, no pay increase until the beginning of 2022. Money is not everything but I have a family and bills to take care. Prices rising is also not helping my case. Should I start looking elsewhere?
