I have only had independent study students one at a time, so I kept things very flexible. I required a meeting in person about once a week, with a weekly sketchbook assignment ( so there is a consistent grade) and I discuss ideas about what projects they want to do. -> some projects will just take more time. I believe that sometimes the process can be more valuable than the out come. I try to address potential problems they may encounter, and basically mentor. I also offer a way that they can send progress photos if necessary and advise if needed.
...and often their sketchbook and studies are worth showing with the finished projects. People often underestimate the pre-work, and brain storming.
. I teach photography so each day I.S students have to take their own photos and write about them academically and using class vocabulary. They also have to find 3 pieces of art. one in the morning, one at lunch time, and one in the afternoon. They then also write about that. Kinda like a photo journal of their trip.
I had advanced students the same period that I taught 9th graders so they were essentially independent study. I kept things pretty flexible as far as what projects we were doing but gave them due dates for projects. Sometimes the due dates became ‘check-in’ dates due to some students schedule conflicts causing a big disparity in completion.
