I have some good ex colleagues who moved over there and also looked up on LinkedIn and see lots of seemingly smart and accomplished people in their D&A team in the UK.
I'll ask my ex colleagues too, but wanted to see if people here have any opinion or information on this too.
TIA

The main issue here is the "way" he's doing things. The budget needs to be balanced now that the COVID dollars are no longer flowing, and there were definitely some areas that needed to be addressed. It feels overall that richer and more privileged folks are now paying attention because their schools were touched and they didn't like it. But they didn't join the fight against this tyrant when they thought their precious school wouldn't be affected.
I want a district where every school provides a decent education for students, not a district that's a hunger games contest to get your kids into the small number of seats at the "good" schools, similar to admission to prestigious private schools. No one seemed to bat an eye in prior years that less than 10% of black boys were reading at or above for 4th grade.... This is a problem in a billion dollar district.
The focus on strict rules will produce small results in the short term, but not in the long term... this will revert back to where we were before.
I’d also add it’s very short sighted to force unproven reforms on the (admittedly) small number of schools that were performing well. There is a lot of smoke and mirrors around defining “autonomy” at those schools, but there’s no telling how the rubber will meet the road when he’s installed cronies to replace the leadership that actually helped those schools succeed.
Terrible. Can’t wait for him to be gone. Awful.
Considering how many “D” and “F” rated schools there are in HISD, it’s clear that a new approach is necessary.
I am uninformed as to pedagogical theory and practices, but broadly speaking, if this new approach is holding teachers accountable and holding students accountable via expulsion and being held back, then there is no reason not to try it.
Houstonians should expect that their schools their taxes pay for have a floor of average, not a ceiling.
It's been a year, and Mike Miles doesn't have much to show except for some pretty questionable "plays" at NRG, a lot of layoffs of Librarians and most recently, a lot of educators (some of whom were valued and critical). Sure he's brought his coat basis down, and made salaries more compelling at NES schools, but it doesn't feel like he's changed much--feels like change for change's sake.
And tons of attrition (some needed, but a lot of it probably isn't)

I'd just like to point out that everyone is worried about the so-called critical thinking but look around you, all engineers and specialists are indian, chinese and Japanese who grow up with standardized tests.
Your kids will be fine with a little less time on sport and humanity.
