This will lead to mass unemployment. Let’s see what happens to advertising revenue when you lose a bunch of customers who are unable to spend.
AC - we’re coming from different life journeys and developing hypotheses based on those individual experiences. It’s perfectly fine to have divergent perspectives - time will tell how things turn out. In the meanwhile, each of us have to play by our beliefs and reasoning and suffer/enjoy the resulting consequences. My outlook and belief is to prepare for the worst while hoping for the best. If things work out fine, it’s great. But hope cannot be a strategy, at least for me.
Not here trying to convince others or be convinced - just putting forward a perspective and listening to others. Ultimately, each of us have to follow our hearts and brains based on our risk tolerances. Just like investing.
All the people you knew in high school who were looked down upon for going to trade school are laughing to the bank while we all worry about this.

Ah yes all the tradesman working with the Mob.
I’m not sure how much of this can be attributed to AI specifically vs just weak professional services market of the last few years. Correlation doesn’t equal causation.
At least just some consulting firms who should truly just have stuck with auditing!
How much of this is also just big tech realizing they were bloated, laying off experienced talent, and then being able to hire experienced talent as needed for below previous market rates?
Also, in the past, higher volumes of new hires relative to experienced hires were partially due to supply and where the companies were in their maturity. In other more mature markets (ex. Pharma), entry level roles have been more rare for ages.
I’m not denying the point of the article, but not sure this point alone is quite as impactful for me.

Why would I hire a new grad with low EQ, social skills and work ethic when I can use AI to do basically the same thing for less money and headache?
Virtually all generations…

I 💯 understand what you’re saying EY1. That was kind of my point. I read a LOT and this hit completely different. It feels like a very definitive inflection point. Like put a marker on today.
I’m pretty good at spotting changes like this - not predicting so much as defining. I felt that way in 2007 when nothing made sense. I felt that way about 18 months ago when stock valuations just didn’t make sense, and that stupid SPAC trend just before that.
I clearly remember when I realized the impact of email and the internet, even before we had heard of the World Wide Web. I remember the first cell phone that was actually accessible - not a business tool that cost about $4,000 in today’s dollars and charged dollars per minute. Funny that I missed the impact of smart phones, but definitely saw what MP3s would do.
I think China is going to fall hard, not because of trump or stupid tariffs, but because of about a dozen really big factors.
I believe power generation will take a giant step forward within 2-3 years and it will change everything, including poverty.
So maybe a little predictive but based on things going on right now. I didn’t initially expect the impact that AI would have because of all the past failures but what’s happening now is completely a snowball rolling down a hill. This article solidified some things in my mind. My personal use reinforces it. Like as impactful as the internet.
Sorry to ramble but this was a thunderbolt.
I’d be interested in hearing what factors will pull down China. I assume you mean drive a recession for them and not a political collapse - would I be right?
And your energy takes, too. I felt we were headed for super cheap energy thanks to cheaper and cheaper renewables and storage, but I thought crypto and then AI might stop this
(Not criticism, just curious what you’re seeing)
And that’s the thing. People call every previous generation lazy, when in reality the boomer system is too lazy to train people.
How is a kid from college gonna have any experience? Every business should have an apprenticeship model.
If your customers do not use AI regularly as part of their business, it would be easy to dismiss the disruption. One example hit me particularly hard. Over the past 25 years, I have used a boutique creative marketing firm to execute specific online strategies. Last time I contacted them, they had shuttered their business because so many of their clients had shifted to “good enough” work from AI rather than truly artistic work produced by people. And the owner of the agency understood the issue: why spend $12k for remarkable when most human beings see marketing work only in fleeting glimpses and cannot tell the difference between AI created work vs high-quality work. That was two years ago.
I recently saw an AI-created car design that was genuinely stunning. It was created by asking ChatGPT to create a “new” car using a mashup of classic images and modern images. Scary-powerful stuff.
