It’s a “Did you bother to google us” question where you fake compliment them
“Tbh I just need a job and you don’t seem horrible”
Just compliment them, most people don’t disagree with compliments
I answer those kinds of questions sarcastically, and how they respond is a usually a good indicator of whether I actually want to work there.
Q: Why do you want to work here?
A: I need the money to pay off my $550k fine for selling pirated copies of Richard Simmons workout videos.
Q: What are some of your strengths?
A: Boiling water. I've never not been able to make that puddle bubble. 100% success rate.
Q: Weaknesses?
A: Richard Simmons. That fun-sized spandex man can get it.
The strengths and weaknesses question - I always respond honestly but say that it’s ever changing. My strengths and weaknesses evolve as I progress and move up in my career.
Because I’m a big fan of your work and have been for a long time. I really thought campaign XYZ was a success and it’s always one I’ve referred to with others. I want to work with the greats and learn from them.
For why, I reference great work the agency has made which isn't on their website which makes them question how I knew about it. That generally puts you a step ahead of other candidates who simply say "your most recent case study is amazing".
Ideally you have a reason you want to work at the agency: quality of work they've shown, admire their team, you believe the skills you'll learn there will help you in your longterm goals. For weaknesses, you think of tasks you've had at previous jobs that you didn't like. Someone might be good at handling ad-hoc project tasks but not managing people. Sets their expectations of you. For strengths, you list what you enjoy doing professionally and thrive in.
