How do you feel about cold calls? Specifically, do you appreciate the calls getting straight into the details, or does individuality/creativity go a long way?

Please don't cold call me, especially at work.

like

I don’t mind it, but I’d rather be contacted about positions I’m actually qualified for. Lately, I’ve received calls from recruiters about firms looking for lawyers completely outside of my area of practice.

like

This is even more amazing because a 4th year funds associate in NY is extremely valuable/placeable. Way better job to work than entry construction lit in Dayton.

What associate likes cold calls? What recruiter likes making them?

Nobody likes doing the job, but everybody loves getting paid for it.

Don't cold call me.

This is how most associates feel

Oh yeah, don't try to get creative with me, lol. Just tell me the details and let me decide if I want to continue the conversation.

Strong dislike. I prefer they get straight to the point. I don't want to make small talk, I have work to do.

like

Don’t cold call with a generic “give me your resume and I can then look for job openings” purpose. You need at least one specific and appropriate job opportunity you are hiring for. And get to the point quickly. “Hi, Xxx. My name is YYY, and I am recruiting a patent litigation attorney with AA to BB years of experience in CITY, STATE.”

like

Part of the reason for the call is to learn what you are interested in. Just calling to pitch seems pointless and even less effective.

Does anyone say just give me your resume and I can look for openings or some variation of this?

Cold calls at my office line are the worst. Do you know how many offices have paper thin walls? A thorough email or LinkedIn message is 100000% more effective. Tell me the position, what they’re looking for, and salary range, don’t just say some generic “I’ve got X position for this AmLaw 100 company in your area and you’d be an excellent candidate. Please reach out if you’re interested in discussing.” I get dozens of recruiter emails each week, and these generic messages do absolutely nothing for informing me whether there’s a position that I should be exploring. Nor do they differentiate you from the dozens of other recruiters simultaneously reaching out to me about the same opening.

like

It’s not as effective though. You make a much better connection with someone over the phone and you can literally read them intuitively as you’re talking to them. You can tell right away if you’re gonna place somebody within the first 15 seconds of talking to them.

This is a very dated method and I’m actually surprised to see recruiters still do it.

I don't think there's anything wrong with phone calls, really. At times emails are blocked, and LinkedIn can be monitored by the employer. It's just another tool in your tool set, really. Thankfully people have options.

Curious if anyone else is or has been in the same boat. I started as an assistant at an entertainment law firm prior to passing the bar. Upon passing, the partner told me they would hire an assistant for me since I now became an associate.
