It’s very top of mind. It’s was very traumatic being in the minority in college, can only imagine as a child. I’m prioritizing diverse, affluent communities
Where we live now is diverse but VHCOL and it just doesn’t make sense to live here forever when you consider LA home prices and child expenses and education. My boyfriend is looking at houses but in order to afford the future we want, we’d have to live in a city where the percentage of POC is only 1%. I just don’t want my kids to experience what I did. They don’t even exist and I feel like I’ve already failed them.
I'm biracial and I also grew up in predominantly white spaces as a child. As a result, I'm keenly aware of the need to be around people that look like you and can relate to you on some level. I've been intentional in seeking to My kids are in a great school district for our area, but the diversity leaves a lot to be desired. Fortunately, they have a black student association, which receives a lot of support from the staff and administration. Being a part of clubs and sports also allows them to connect with other kids like them in a smaller, intimate group.
My church has also been a great place to meet other black families. In general, I just try to be intentional about seeking out places and opportunities to meet other black families.
My kids would be biracial and because my family isn’t local, I don’t want the only black person they know to just be me 😭 You’ve given me some ideas and I appreciate you.
I went through the same and it’s traumatizing af As a child. You have to be intentional about engaging with other moms of black or mixed children, putting them in activities, Jack & Jill if that makes sense.
