Been on a project for over a year and leadership won’t let me roll off

Ever push back and ask why? If my team asked to roll off because they’ve learned and done as much as they can, I’d be open to the idea. Otherwise I’d be holding back their development.
They usually make you stay for the long haul if you’re good. You’ve already built rapport with the client, know their systems, project flow, etc.
They typically try to keep you as long as possible if the client really, really likes you. Though a good manager should find a way to increase your responsibilities that’ll lead to a promotion.

If it’s govt depends. Federal contracts are multi year as it is.
When is it up for extention? Would they need you for a strong re-compete?
6-8 mo, yes to rolling off

The project management’s incentives are different than yours, and to a certain extent, the firm’s. I’ve seen many good people quit the firm to change projects.

Agreed. Have seen the same...and it’s unfortunate. I’ve known folks who really enjoyed the firm they were at, found it difficult to roll off, and had a horrible manager on a project. The only way out was to leave the firm.
Love long term projects. Better chance to get stretch roles, drive sales, develop relationships with execs.
Two years on a project, and my leadership team has consistently refused to let me roll off for the last year, because I was one of the few starting members of the project. I haven’t been growing in this project for the last 6 months and I’m very close to leaving the firm, there’s no other way out.
