I will only buy gifts if something really speaks to me for a specific leader, based on their interests, inside jokes, convos we've had, things that happened at work, etc. But I do gift handmade items and baked goods. I think that's less likely to seem like you're trying to impress and feels more like just a warm gesture.
I'm not getting mine anything, and they're not getting me anything. In my opinion, gifts should always go down the chain of command, not up. If you do feel obligated to get yours something, $25 sounds about right to me too. A card with an Amazon gift card in it seems like a no-brainer.
I always heard that you don’t gift up. So I never give them anything.
I spent around $25, I think. I got him a funny mug and a joky cookbook.
I did something small but it was the same thing I got everyone on the team. It was like $5-10
The original etiquette was/is reports don't buy gifts for bosses - it's the other way around. I've never bought any boss a holiday gift. I've gotten them bday cards:)

keep it modest or group-based. Thoughtfulness beats price every time.

I only really buy if they do etc. but this year we all participated in a secret Santa so everyone was involved with a budget of £10 which was nice.
