How much do you all keep as an emergency fund, and where do you usually keep it? I set aside about $25-30k since I’m single. I keep it in super safe stuff like a savings account or invest in T-Bills. The rest of my saving is in investment accounts, but I like knowing I have that “just in case” cushion. Curious what feels right for you and if you keep it in cash or invest it somewhere safe?

I have $20k or so sitting in my savings account. I'd like to get that closer to $40k-$50k so that I'm not in crisis mode if I ever get laid off. That would give me at least 6 months worth of living expenses, which seems like more than enough time to land a new job.

I have an emergency fund of 10k. That took a while to get up, but I feel a lot better having it and still contributing. That’s also in a savings account, something I can get access to in said emergency. Then, index stocks are my other way of investing.

That’s great! $10k is a solid amount, and I totally agree - having that emergency fund is such a relief. I love that you’re also investing in index funds on top of it!

I just turned 38 and my mortgage is my only debt.

I have $35-40k liquid because I’m unmarried and own a home. I purchased it over a year ago so I am slowly becoming comfortable with not needing so much sitting in my MMS or CDs and will invest a little and probably feel comfortable since I’m salary and also receive an annual bonus.

My salary is $131k but I was laid off in 2023 so I’m always a bit nervous to not have an “oh shit” fund. But I also want to prioritize my retirement and investments.

That’s really smart! Having that cushion makes total sense, especially after experiencing a layoff. Sounds like you’re in a great position to start easing some of that cash into investments while still keeping a solid safety net!

I think the number is going to be different for every person. Reading the comments makes me realise how little money I make, would take me years to save up 35k :’) I guess whatever feels right for you!

Totally agree! Everyone’s situation is different, and saving any amount is still a big accomplishment. It’s all about what makes you feel secure, not about hitting someone else’s number :)

I have about 6 month’s expenses in a HYSA as an emergency fund, but I’m currently hoarding cash on top of that since my spouse will be laid off soon. Unfortunately we live in such a high cost of living area that my income alone is not enough to break even month-to-month.

Sorry to hear about your spouse’s upcoming layoff, but you’re taking a really smart approach by building that extra cushion, especially in such a high-cost area. Having that backup must provide some peace of mind right now.

I accepted a new job, they said PTO was “generous.” I find out it’s 19 days a year of PTO (which includes sick days). I have two young children and we like to vacation 1-2x a year (no more than a few days away each time). Am I crazy that this is pretty limited time off? 8 of the normal holidays off during the year (working the week between Christmas and NYE). Thoughts? I dont know if lack of PTO is a good reason to back out, is it?
