Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?
Can anyone share their experience with an ESOP?

No rule on it, it's personal preference. I don't care if my friends or family know what I'm making. Coworkers are a little more sensitive. I wouldn't want anything to get awkward if they found out I was earning more or vice versa, not that it would be for me - I'd be mad at the company, not them. Friends/family/neighbor salaries aren't helpful at all unless they work in the same industry as me. Coworkers would be because I'd know if I'm fairly compensated or not.
Same here. I normally draw the line at coworkers
The more knowledge we have, the better. It only benefits the richest of the rich for all of us to be feeling competitive and distrustful of each other. If I know what my neighbor is making and I can leverage that information to benefit my career, why not?
100% agreed in theory.
In practice, it's a little murkier. My family and my husband's family know how much we make. As a rule, they also live in places where what we make is more than saving a little every month.
I've had a relative look up the price of the gifts I brought them for a holiday before then point out that we're "rich" at a following get-together. We aren't, point of fact, we're struggling to make ends meet as our housing is tied to our jobs and vice versa, and housing and food are reaching all time highs here.
There have been other events that make me think transparency in the workplace is everything we need to start step one as employees, and that should be kept firmly unknown to anyone in the family.
The problem is people think just because they are at the same level that they should make the same. In reality ability and effort are not equal which in a lot of cases makes up for pay differences. Most companies pay for performance so after a few years pay differences can happen.
