How much special considerations or accommodations should parents get? The team members without kids are getting annoyed that those with kids tend to leave early or come in late because of whatever issue or needs their kids have. Trying to find a fair balance is tricky.

Do they make the time up? You could implement a Flex Time policy for all employees of a couple hours per week (with manager approval). That way a non-parent could be late for a dentist appointment but stay late to make it up rather than use sick time. Also, the kid issues should fall under sick time if the buckets are separate.

I know this always makes me the villain in people’s eyes. However, I don’t think parents should get special accommodations that others don’t. It’s not fair that people without small children are expected to pick up the slack of those with kids.

Isn't that why companies offer PTO time for such circumstances? Also, if serious health condition, it would be covered under FMLA.

My husband worked 2nd or 3rd shift to avoid times like this. He was home when they were sick, then I would be there when he worked.

We always had back up babysitters too.
