First off, I want to say I was in a similar situation for almost a decade. Over time things will get better. There is hope. Don’t lose heart.
It is one of two things:
1. They understand you can’t leave. So, they are prioritizing other folks who are a flight risk for better raises.
2. Your contributions aren’t as valuable as you think, even though you worked very hard.
If it is 1 above, your best path forward is to see if you can get a Visa sponsorship from another company and move on.
If it is 2 above, you may benefit from turning the conversation with your manager to “how you can add more value” vs. how underpaid you are.
If you keep looking at levels data and talking to people about how much they make, you will be miserable. Just don’t do that for a bit.
Good luck.
1. I can't change my job easily due to visa related issues.
2. The salary info I have is accurate as I got it out of the official sources.
3. Right before my review, they changed the leveling system and gave me a lollipop title: Engineer II
4. During my review, I showed them the salary data in my area and showed how I'm being severely underpaid. To that, my skip told me "Take it or leave it!" 🥲 My manager said nothing!
5. I know I started at the short end of the stick. But it was COVID time and I was desperate.
Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful to have a job amidst this insane job market but the comparison in the back of my mind is killing me every single day. As per levels.fyi, even the people right out of school make on average 20% more than I do.
So, how do I keep my head down, keep improving myself, and become a better engineer even though I know that I'm being severely underpaid? I feel stuck and helpless!
TIA for any tips/advice/insight 🙏🏻
