You can ask them for more money without first sharing that you actually have an offer in hand. See how they respond before deciding to share your offer. This approach is less direct but also less awkward than starting with "I really like you guys but here is an offer I need you to match for me to stay".
Interesting approach. I'm conflicted.
Wouldn't it backfire if they are thinking 10% would be an appropriate increase to make someone feel valued? If your offer is for instance a 50% increase they might not grasp the magnitude of the situation. I would be concerned about causing them to lose face by needing to ask twice.
