I'm on the other end of it as a hiring manager and I can say there has never been more talented pmms on the market at one time so it's not just you -- and don't give up! There are still many open roles out there, but organizations are going to be pickier in looking for people with more specific domain expertise in skill sets in a way they might not have been even a year or two ago. So, if this is helpful for you, I recommend really thinking about how you show you understand the product, market or industry and skills specific for any job, starting with the resume but working hard to have that a tailored POV in the interviews -- like understanding the personas, the competitors, feature set, how you would drive growth for the product, what type of content you would write, etc. The more work I have to do to imagine whether you can figure that out vs someone who already has done that work, the harder gets it
All fair points, thanks so much!
Full transparency, I have 6 years as a PMM in the DevOps/AppSec space with 15+ certifications, and I’ve had over 120 first round interviews, and made it to final rounds 14 times. Still no offer. Sometimes it’s a position getting pulled back, or they decide to not go remote. But what’s been consistent is that it is the most challenging market I’ve had to experience to date.
Yes and no. Five of them are specific to technologies in the space I operate (DevOps & AppSec), such as ML/AI, Data Analytics, AppSec, etc. Then the other 10 are Product Marketinng specific, ex. seven courses from the Product Marketing Alliance, and a few others from LinkedIn & Udemy.
That said, I highly reccomend joining the PMA community. If you haven’t taken any other certifications, they hold the most credibility (in my experience), and offer great value.
Haven't been looking much because of the state of things. It's rough by all accounts.
That’s what I’m afraid of
I’ve been applying since Jan. I’ve had 5 first interviews and 1 eight hour experience, I didn’t get the job. I am taking a break till the new year. It’s a tough market.
Damn I’m sorry to hear that
Have also been applying since March with a break in the summer. Got a few final stages but no offers. I’m waiting for an offer to come through by EOY possibly. It’s very competitive at the moment, especially if you’re going for remote roles.
Spoke too soon lmfao. The offer went to the other candidate with a “if only we had a second role we would certainly offer it to you”. Back to square one. :(
