Because the day after Thanksgiving is always a Friday. People want the long weekend as much as possible
Less work means more people can take off.
More time to Black Friday shop and stimulate the economy?
I get a kick out of the exchange's old timey traditions that keep holding on, but the day after Thanksgiving one is puzzling. Shutting down a few hours early doesn't help make it a long weekend, outside of a few hours. I imagine there must be some lore associated with it that isn't obvious to us today.
Never even thought about that. I bet it suited somebody well at the time and has since been lost in time.
