It's hard to save money living in NYC.

Eh, plumbers sometimes have the worst pipes and pharmacists have disorganized medicine cabinets

You're not alone my friend. Saving is difficult. I'm trying to get better at it but there is something to be said about enjoying the money you're making too. We're not killing ourselves to just enjoy our time 20-30 years later.

It's honestly not that bad just need to be a little smart with your money. Set a budget that allows for you to have a good time and just stick to it that way you know you're at least saving something

🙌 its not even a joke.. I got barely saved up. YOLO, right?!

Thanks for making our economy go round and round! 😀

^^this. It's such an easy place to spend money on unnecessary things and conveniences. NYC is a money pit.

This never ceases to amaze me: people in finance seem to be either really good or bad with their own money. Definitely a matter of habits rather than knowledge. Think about your priorities and develop the habits that allow you to be better with your money. This is a deliberate choice on your part.

Sanity check. I like a nice lifestyle. Currently make 350-550k with bonus. 53 years old. About 400k in brokerage. Another 1.9million in retirement accounts. House worth 1.2 million with loan of 625k. For retirement pension will be $2400 per mo which goes to my wife if I die for life. Another 3800k Per month estimated from Social Security. I plan on working another 10 years or so maybe less once the kids graduate college. I am this will be out in 2024. What should I be doing or thinking about?

If I see one more article on how millennials are ruining the economy or housing market by not buying enough homes or selling enough homes I'm going to scream. We were saving for 3 years before Covid and had to use a solid chunk to take care of ourselves and our families during quarantine. Now that we're ready to save again inflation and COL are at an all-time high and we're headed into a recession. And somehow this is my fault for what...not being a boomer? Bffr.

Why is it when I owe money to a state from my annual tax filings, if I don’t pay the full amount I get charged interest. But when they owe me, they ask for additional documentation and won’t pay me interest for them stonewalling me. Not much volatility y/y in earnings.

What’s the general guidance on the order to maximize retirement contributions for tax benefits for an normal individual and for a self employed/small business owner before moving to taxable accounts or alternate vehicles like cash value life policies?
I’ve seen for individual: match trad 401k->match roth 401k->max roth IRA->max trad IRA->max trad 401k->max roth 401k->max HSA
For self employed: max SEP IRA/solo 401k->max roth IRA->max trad IRA->max HSA

Of course situations differ but in general?

Hello, after doing some research I believe I’m being underpaid. About 4 months ago HR did a market analysis for my role. They bumped my salary for about $2k. I’m a mid-level Executive assistant with 6 years of experience and currently supporting 5 executives at a fortune 50 company. One C level and 4 Vice Presidents. I’m currently making $61,000 with bonus included. Based on my research I should at least be making $71,400. I have a check in with my boss tomorrow and I am asking for a raise.
