Play the dumb card.
Be honest with them now, but tell them you just found out. Then, let them tell you the options for maternity leave.
They can’t fire you. But feel like this is something that should be brought up during the interview process - they can’t not hire you because of it - but trust is an issue now at the personal level.
Agreed; and if it’s someone who won’t hire you because you are pregnant, probably not a good fit anyway. Most companies don’t care
They can't legally fire you for being pregnant, no, nor would they. However, check your ST disability policy. Sometimes you need to be employed for a certain number of months to claim maternity leave. Def should have asked about this while interviewing because now you might be out of any income when you do go on leave
It’s your personal matter, your employer does not need to know if you’re pregnant.
Also 3 months pregnant is pretty soon to be Announcing anyways for all they know she has just found out
They can’t fire you for it but you have no rights to maternity leave in the U.S. You will be an absolute wreck after having a baby. You can’t just pop it out and go back to your life. Physically you are recovering from some massive internal and external wounds, your hormones are off the rails, and your baby will wake up all night long. My first was like being tortured. Every 45 minutes he woke up crying. I thought I was going to die. I went back after 12 weeks, which is longer than you can hope for, and it was very, very hard. I had to take medical leave within the year because I was breaking down. I was in public accounting at the time, which did heavily contribute, but I have PTSD thinking back on that time.
I hope they don't. One of my close friends was pregnant when she started at a public accounting firm and she was not fired when they heard. She even toolk the 3 months unpaid and they kept her position and all. I hope the Govt is even better.
I started at EY and found out I was pregnant a week after (I had no idea). I went on maternity leave, and came back like I never left. Progressed twice (right before I left, and after I came back), and I’m up for promotion next year. Partner said during comp meeting that I’m on track to get promoted. I definitely have worked hard and some long hours to make sure I “caught up” for being gone that long, but never had any issues.
Thank you everyone for the responses and your insights . I definitely thinking about telling them soon after my start date, which is next week. …. and about maternity leave … even if I am not eligible for it, it is better to live on reduced income for 3 mo then not to have a job at all. Fingers crossed!
Just pretend that you found out now.. focus on work but let them know in advance about maternity leave.
You cannot be fired. Tell your manager when you are starting to show the pregnancy, for some people it is 4 months, for others it is 6-7 months. Don't worry about it. Focus on enjoying your pregnancy.
