Has anyone transitioned from working in a company to being an independent contractor? How long did the transition take and what are the pros or cons from working solo?

Can someone share what softwares/languages are useful to know in this field? I am pivoting Into this field and want to get into consulting/asset management. It’d be a huge help if you can share your experiences too!
