Get it in writing either way. A bonus never materializing means they just promised it. Don’t leave anything up to chance.

Yeah, that’s a super relatable dilemma and honestly, after getting burned by “big bonus potential” that turns into crumbs (or nothing), I’d lean hard toward negotiating the base this time.
Here’s why: base salary is the only part that’s guaranteed. It’s what your bonus calculations are usually based on, it’s what your 401(k)/retirement match is based on, it affects your overtime (if eligible), and most importantly; it’s what future jobs will anchor their offers to if they ask “what’s your current base?” (which we all know they shouldn't be asking)
Definitley go for base pay, it will end up being more money in the long run. Make sure you get it in writing like others said so they can't go back on it.
Negotiate both. You have nothing to lose. Some companies have more room and leeway in different areas. If you don’t like their answer then unlock a third and forth door … what about a sign on bonus? Those are the best because you get the lump sum money up front and you would be surprised how much flexibility they have with them. Or ask for 2 more weeks of vacation (which some orgs let you cash out).
