This is like any other tool… prepare a justification for its use at work and ask for them to purchase it. Don’t be surprised if they actually end up with a proprietary access to AI like ChatGPT, for security concerns. Your employer may be concerned you are divulging proprietary information.
Oh heck no. We pay for tools you have a business need for, and will provision an account for you. If you pay for some account for yourself, you are sending signals that you are subverting organization security.
I am using my own paid AI accounts to do prototypes. Which is good because I own it now and if I go elsewhere they can’t claim it is their IP. I see it as a benefit now. And they won’t let me use anything with proprietary data so I can’t do anything on their Copilot system anyway except ask to remind me how to do a VLOOKUP in excel. Which is moderately handy but just a glorified Google. So no.
I wrote in independent agency work as outside activities when signing my contract so I’m good.
And either way I could just go and create this stuff again any time.
Anyway, thanks for your concern, I am protected from a contractual standpoint. I always give myself room to focus on outside activities when signing up with a new company.
