I feel like I was smarter in law school and sometimes even in high school or younger. I think it’s because I was less burned out, more curious, and had more time to really absorb information on different topics. Now I just focus on what I do and I’m not always that interested or motivated. I feel like I now know less. And sometimes I’m slower to make connections, which I think it’s because I’m less interested and more distracted and just tired.

No this is so real. Scientifically and anecdotally unfortunately. I’m pregnant with my second and everything feels so much harder than it used to!
Yes I feel like I actually got dumber now that I’m a lawyer. It made my thinking super restrictive I don’t know how else to describe it

Studies show that cognitive function actually improves for many as they age. So this may be a self-perception issue, not a reality.
Consider our environment — legal work culture encourages the performance of competence, and discourages asking questions and showing vulnerability. Our colleagues may act like they know all the answers, but this cannot be true.
