I got a job offer from another company that pays $20k more than my current salary. I actually like my job and would prefer to stay, but I'm definitely underpaid. Is it risky to tell my boss about the other offer to see if they'll match it? I've heard mixed things about whether counteroffers work or if it just makes them want to replace you eventually.

I think you should. You have that other offer if things go wrong. Have you done a few interviews with the new place where you can get an idea if it may be a good transition if you decide to leave? I loved my previous job and was paid pretty well. The Owner and Manager however was very toxic. I thought I was going to be stuck there. Then their biggest competitor reached out to me. I did 4 interviews wanting to ensure it was the right fit on both sides. They offered me quite a bit more money and I made the leap. I am so thankful I did. If you are not in the position to give up a $20k increase- at least give it a chance.

I always think an attempt to negotiate with a counteroffer is a bad idea. If your current job didn't think you were worth the money up until now why even feel any loyalty to them? And once they know you went out and got another offer their view of you will change, they'll consider you disloyal. They may match the offer just to avoid replacing you, but they'll replace you when they can.

This is the only answer

Congratulations! That’s great

Congrats on the offer. A bit risky, but if you’re willing to walk it could be ok. I’ve seen it go both ways and it depends on your relationship with them.

Are you willing to accept the offer? Tell them if so. If you do it tactfully and make it clear the only reason you were looking elsewhere was for more money, it should mitigate some of the risk of them trying to replace you down the line. If they won't entertain countering to match your offer, they clearly don't value you and it's time for you to go.

Yes. But you could attempt to ask for a raise at your current job based on other research (local average, etc.) and see what they say. Give them a time frame to get back to you so you have a chance to give a final answer to the new job. If they don’t- the tell them byeeee. Hope all works out well!

In the current market unless you are grossly underpaid they could probably find someone who will do your job for less. Sadly there are so many people who have been out of work 6 months or more at this point that there are lots of really qualified people taking 25% pay cuts just to land something while they keep looking. I took a $40K base pay cut for my recent role but my overall OTE and stock options are better and the company I left was toxic and circling the drain of PE hell so the more secure bet was the lower paid role. You need to look at the whole picture. Plus new company covers 100% of the cost of health insurance for my whole family so that is like a $500 a month raise right there.

LinkedIn is a garbage app where I can’t even post my opinion or experience because it will go against the mainstream ideologies. If I even “like” a post then I worry that my peers and managers see what I like and suddenly I need inclusivity training. What a load of shit! You can’t be who you truly are on that app. Which is why I like fishbowl so much, the anonymity is a game changer. If LinkedIn was a anonymous, we’d see a lot more support for Kanye and a lot less LGBQT material. Bet!

What are some good modern/post-pandemic personal finance books you can recommend?

All these weddings are blowing my mind and budget. I've had 5 weddings so far this year with several more to go by EoY. On top of that I've been asked to be in a lot of them which adds additional time commitment and cost. The cost of a bachelor party + shitty men's warehouse suit rental + travel and airbnb for the weekend + couple hundred bucks for wedding gift means I'm blowing tons of money for these weddings but I feel bad to say no.

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!

Hi all. I just received an offer for $130k and will be eligible for about 29,000 shares of stock options. The vesting schedule is 1 year and then quarterly thereafter.

Can someone explain what this means? I “will be eligible”. So, I have to buy the shares? Should I be asking at what price?

Something needs to change. Labor of love aint enough for the people in this job.
