I’m giving my notice on Monday. I’m looking for advice on:
- Checklist of things to do, both before Monday and within next 2 weeks
- Tips on convo informing Counselor / Manager
- Anything else that’s good to know / not well known

I’m giving notice soon, too. I’ve been making a checklist. So far:

1) Use well-being subsidy.
2) Use FSA.
3) Save pay stubs and comp statements
4) Save your contacts
5) Save copies of your recent time and expense reports for this PY and FY
6) Save copies of your AMEX statements
7) Do an AMEX reconciliation
8) Transfer any remaining points from your AMEX into personal AMEX (open a no-fee one if you don’t already have one)
9) Get any personal items off your mobile
10) Get any personal items off your laptop
11) Make sure your health insurance is set: determine if you need COBRA if you’re not starting a new job in the same month your employment terminates.
12) Note how much PTO you have

likehelpfulsmart

Don’t see why not.

13) See what’s in your pension account and save a statement
14) Make sure all of your outstanding compliance items are up to date to avoid delaying PTO payout

likehelpful

I honestly don't remember seeing that. And basically if I didn't do that step, all that happens is that I get it 2 weeks later?

You could streak through your office. Once in a lifetime opportunity.

One you put your notice in, you ARE monitored for file transfers. Be careful!

like

I think the checklists are great, I wish I had these when I left. As for the conversations tell your counselor first because I think they get a notification when you put it in the system. Then break it to your project, network etc. have your spield ready and right on why your leaving because they are going to try and keep you. They will also ask uncomfortable questions like what is your new salary and push you to share where you are going (if you aren’t making that public). Don’t feel pressured to answer anything. Remember, this information will make its way through your entire network if you tell one person.

Make a list of people you want to stay in contact with (you never know when/how your paths may cross in the future)

like

Be sure to get any personal items off your laptop BEFORE you put the formal notice in. Unless it’s changed since I left, your email gets locked down so you can’t send emails with attachments to external emails. Or it’s monitored one, can’t recall. To get any personal files after that point, there is a process but it’s annoying to go thru

like

This is correct. They locked my ability to send emails with attachments about half hour after I submitted notice. Get personal items off in advance.

like

Love the series of comments. Thank you to everyone!! I started saving personal things 6 months ago when I started interviewing. But there were definitely a few ideas here that I hadn’t considered.

like

Also what are the personal things you mention? Any personal files you had downloaded?

Make sure you call/check on your 401k match and pension (if applicable). Also make sure you export your cellphone address book (use one of the many apps), as all numbers are backed up to Deloitte and you will lose them all when you return your phone

like

Yes - as C1 mentioned, depending on where you’re going, you may have to turn in your laptop immediately, especially if you’re going to a competitor. Assume you’re going to lose your laptop the same day you give notice.

I might be moving to a competitor . But I am afraid that I might blurt it out since I am not great at lying. Any tips to avoid name dropping or having this convo?

My coach was happy as he worked at the firm I was going to previously.

My client/coach actually asked me to stay longer to help with transition and client relationship handoff.

But 2 weeks is 2 weeks. Did not want to stay longer than professionally expected.

2b) I just figured out that you can create a non-SSO login to the WageWorks portal to file FSA claims. This means you can manage claims without being logged into ToD, which could be useful to file or monitor claims after you leave. I believe you’re allowed to file claims for an expenses incurred while you were an active employee, even after you leave.

Does anyone know what happens with your health insurance when you leave? Say you were to leave at end of September and not start new job until following January, how can you continue the coverage until the end of the year?

like

Not quite, OP. COBRA is a federal law that allows you to continue your coverage through your former employer — you just have to pay the entire cost of coverage rather than just the employee cost. It’s quite a bit more expensive, but it’s doable.

like

If we have PTO, do we just extend our last day? So if I have 5 PTO days is my last day just 3 weeks from today rather than 2 weeks?

I got my last pay check (2 weeks after my last day) and it did not include my PTO days that I hadn't taken. Is this a mistake?

If possible take a backup of emails.

Congrats on making it to the other side.

I’m not bad with money but definitely lots of room to improve overall, due to several personal factors I don’t want to list in full here (numerous unanticipated medical bills, bad boyfriends, etc.) Hence why I only have $3k in savings right now. My first mini goal is to have $5k saved by the end of December. I need motivation and words of encouragement. If I pay off my medical bills, I won’t make my goal. I have to start putting saving money first. Getting depressed about my situation.
