I graduated last December with an accounting degree and 150 credits, unfortunately I didn't get work experience in accounting during college and it seems every entry level job requires 2-3 years experience. I try applying for internships but they're usually just looking for people in college still so I don't usually even get a chance for an interview. I apply to bookkeeping positions, assistant positions, internships, temp jobs whether its auditing, accounting, taxation and nothing. Tips?

Google the list of top 50 accounting firms. Identify which firms have an office in your area. Scan your LinkedIn and college network to see if you can connect with someone at one of your listed firms so that they provide you with a referral, this is generally guarantees that you get your foot in the door with an interview at minimum. You can try to ask a random person on fishbowl for a referral, but some firms prefer that there is a real relationship of some sort between the two. Don’t apply until you have a referral, because if you put in two applications it might mess with the HR recruiting system and you might get locked out of applying again for a certain period of time.

You should have an idea of what you want to focus on (audit or tax). No one likes someone who is unsure of what they want to do. You don’t even have to do it forever. You just have to know where you want to start. Sounds like you need the experience, so I’d pick something and stick with it for a year or two. Hell, you might have to take what’s offered since the market ain’t great out there.

Fyi, Unlikely that you’ll find an entry level offer in industry unless you have an inside connection. Generally the same for govt roles.

If that doesn’t work, google smaller local offices in your area and network your way in. Smaller local offices probably have less requirements and will take you in if they need the help. These firms might focus more on taxes or bookkeeping, really just depends on the client base. The ideal scenario is that you work for someone who can sign off on your CPA hours. But again, if u can’t find that, just take what you can get and figure out how to level up as you go.

Maybe join a professional networking group for your profession and try to go out to events and meet people. I’m not a recruiter, but sometimes those events will allow you to meet people already at companies you want to work for.

Use your career center, they should have contacts and some sort of pipeline that gets you an internship. Also use Handshake. You can still apply for internships even though you are out of school. Often they accept applicants within a year or so of graduation. Most accounting firm are hiring for 2026-2027 though.

You already graduated so there’s no point in applying for internships.

Apply to a state or city job directly on the gov website. Anything accounting related (ex; auditor, tax analyst , accounting clerk, tax analyst, fiscal , etc). Warning- there is a very short application window and jobs are added frequently, so check regularly for new positions

The pay is low, and most don’t think about gov jobs when looking for work, so there’s low competition.. Use it a a stepping stone so you’ll get the entry level experience you need to find a better paying job in the future.

I worked in the Accounting field as an auditor for the Internal Revenue Service and I loved my job. This was an entry position as I do not have a degree even though I have the desire to be an enrolled agent. Keep plugging away and you may find that government jobs offer entry level positions. I recently found out that a tax accountant entry position can make less than I was making.

I was listening to a Mufti Menk lecture yesterday on this topic. Surah Nashra is also about burdens we bear. Within this Surah,Allah SWT speaks about how He is the one that granted the cure, purity, and strength after the backs were about to break. Allah SWT takes us to this point to refine us. We never know our capabilities until we are tested and challenged. This is when we realize we can do it and we can get through it 🫶🏻! IA you got this 🫶🏻!

I have been offered a job at KPMG within cyber security in the uk. Originally it was a 25% hike offer. Now I have received a 8% hike at Deloitte as part of the current performance cycle along with a 5k bonus (great incentives every year) The only thing is KPMG is offering this in a @kpmg regional location where I’m based plus the disadvantage is I need to pay 2500£ for my dependent visa costs which I can save if I continued with Deloitte. Seen Lot of negative comments about KPMG. Any thoughts ?

I would love some suggestions on transitioning and career paths.

I gave 15+ years in healthcare claims (payer side, physician/facility side) and revenue cycle management. I’m burnt out and want to transition away from revenue cycle mgmt.

I only have my Associates degree and would currently need to take a job that is remote with no/minimal phone responsibilities. What roles do you recommend that would allow me to transition my skills while maintaining a minimum salary of 50k?

Hi ! I have gotten an offer via email for what I believe is level 9 data visualization specialist in the dc area. I have a masters and 3.5 years of consulting experience. I’ve gotten an initial offer and trying to get some context on what the range is for this and whether I should push for more or accept. It is 5,000 above what I said my minimum was, but is significantly more than my current salary. Thanks for any input :)
