I had a non-finance/business friend ask me what I do for my job, and I found myself at a loss for how to describe it. I just kind of said “I spend a lot of time in Excel”. I just don’t think that does the analyst role justice. How would you word it in an easy to understand way?

Fellow analyst here, and I've definitely had the same thought before. I think I said "I live in Excel" lol but that really undersells the whole thing. Now I tell people I help companies make smarter decisions by turning financial data into clear insights. I dig into numbers to spot trends, plan for the future, and make sure the money is being used wisely. That's the elevator pitch.

That's like most of my relatives, they just know I do something with computers and they're actually quite impressed by that. If I had to explain it more fully to someone socially, I guess I'd say I look at a lot of numbers and try to make sense of them. Or, depending on the mood, I might toss in a lot of buzzwords.

I never know exactly what to say when people ask what I do so sorry, no help here but just wanted to empathise. The issue is if they don’t really know already, it’s probably too complex to actually explain within 2 mins so best to keep it vague

Heheh this made me laugh because this is what I always say as well. Even when I go into the weeds of what I actually do theres no way to really make anyone understand. I usually tell them I do alot of computer work and I spend a lot of time in Excel.
