I had a recruiter say “this is our best and final offer,” but I’ve heard that’s not always actually final. I didn’t push further at the time, but now I’m second guessing it. Has anyone negotiated successfully after hearing that?

It probably has worked out for people, but it's a dangerous game to play. Companies will rescind offers, and one reason is because the candidate made unrealistic demands or they appeared unserious. If someone is told that's the final offer, and they refuse to heed that, it could be seen as problematic behavior. And that could get an offer pulled. In this job market it seems like it would be an especially risky move, there are plenty of other candidates and people may lose patience quickly.

I agree it’s problematic if you continue to negotiate a best & final.
It would be fine to say something like “that’s a pity, I really like the role, but the lowest I could accept is X. If the budget changes in future, I’d love to hear from you”
But of course you should be fully prepared that they will walk away in this scenario.

I wouldn’t push back on that - coming from a recruiter. This isn’t a negotiation tactic. They are most likely being told this is finial from powers above.

If you actually want the job I’d take it and stop pushing. Having done recruiting sometimes it truly is the best and final - pushing further only sours the relationship.

Ask for a comp review after your probation or at 6 months and have them formally include it in the offer letter. Or document it. This at least keeps that door open while your prove yourself.

Negotiating comp up-front is important because it’s likely the biggest increase you get at the company in one shot. If you feel short sold, keep looking then leave or use that offer to leverage your comp up again.

Just know, it’ll put you in a group where when layoffs come around, you’re higher on the list because they know you’re a flight risk.

I wouldn’t push after hearing something like that unless the offer really isn’t great

There’s always another offer

You made the right call. They are using clear communication with you. If you try to push what they have made clear is their final offer, you are going to have the offer rescinded and they will move onto another candidate.

How do people here think of compensation changes exiting consulting to an early stage startup? (I.e how much of a cut or bump would you expect, how much equity would you require to make up for lost guaranteed cash comp etc.). For all my fans of the “it depends”, let’s assume each job’s WLB are identical and both are equally interesting. This particular company is just around 40 employees, tech startup very broadly speaking. TIA.

A coworker and I Both have been a tech for the same amount of years but she got 1.50 more than I did. How do I bring this up as the supervisor mentioned that we shouldn’t be talking about our raises.

Hi All! Looking for some advice. I am a manager a country club but I do everything. I’m in charge of outside events and member events, in charge of the front of house staff, scheduling, ordering and membership sales for the club. I feel I am very underpaid at $45k. I do get commission but it’s very low ($10k give or take for the year). I work 6/7 days a week sometimes 10+ hrs/day. I’ve been researching salaries to be able to negotiate higher pay. I want to ask for $60k-is this reasonable?

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…
